The pigs are every where. I have had my best luck on north base. As far as sheds they are there but you are right they are pretty hard to find. I have found 6 ranging from a 3 inch spike to a 4 point. If I were you I would get a pig tag and head right back to that spot and get yourself a pig. They are great eating.

Its pretty much true for the freshwater lakes on base. The rains have come and filled some areas up. The best bet still is going to be pine canyon lake. i think that there are still some good fish in there. Your best bet is going to be the ocean fishing. There is several places that are still great for rock cod, lingcod, grassy rock fish, perch and halibut.

A couple days ago I saw a very large fork by the railroad tracks just before going to Rod and gun club. He had a very tall rack. I also saw one in the draws just off of Hwy 1 heading north just past San antonio west. There is a paved entrance on the left side of the road about 1/3 mile past san antonio west. park there and head into the draw.

About 4 months ago we did a control burn near SL2 to get rid of weeds that were inhibiting the Snowy Plover from nesting. We also had plans to burn the ponds near the bird sancutary but that never panned out. How is it that when it is a envirometalist idea it goes through with no problems but when the public come up with an idea we are shot down. The punch bowl lake and pine canyon overgrowth along with the general overgrowth of the base can be prevented. The simple solution is to let the Fire Department do thier job and do some control burns. Not only does this reduce the chance for a catastrophic fire but it promotes new growth of plant life and allows easier access for hunters and the benefits just go on. I missed the town hall meeting where I wished i could have brought that up. Maybe the punch bowl lake disaster will bring this to light. We need to voice this option to the enviromentalists.

For the season I traveled to just outside of Jawbone canyon just past mojave with my father-in-law. I did not see any quail but came up on some chukar. That is one hard bird to hunt. I still have not had a chance to hunt Quail on Vandenberg this year, however during my attempts to get a pig over the last two weeks I have come across several coveys of quail. If any would like some locations were I have seen them I can email them to you.

Roy, I have to agree with mr. crowder. I have looked for places that to me would be either a good beddown or feeding area with open area around it. I then visit the place more than just once. I have also found it beneficial to talk to what I call the non-resident hunters at the BX. They often find the pigs take a shot, miss and never return to the area. I have found that the same pig will be back the next night. Last year I took my father in law hunting and he took a shot and missed, the next night same exact location my brother in law took a shot and missed, third night my turn, down pig. I love to hunt and now I am starting to video game and hunts. If you ever need a hunting partner or would like me to video a hunt I am almost always available.
