The spammers are at it again. Even with the stronger registration process, they still want to do their dirty deeds. I try to stay on top of this and ban them when I discover it. Anytime you find a spammer I've missed, let me know.

Thanks,

The Moderator

5  General Category / Feral Pig Hunting / Re: pig sightings or tracks ? on: January 22, 2013, 03:05:46 PM
As a wildlife/nature photographer I have been able to learn some things from that and it has improved my hunting techniques and I've used some of my hunting techniques that applied to photography. I have found that scouting an area is first and foremost the best approach towards a successful shot; wither its hunting or photography. But my advantage is I'm somewhat retired and I can afford to take the time to do that. So what does one do when only here for the weekend?

Some good places to go scouting are firebreaks and jeep trails for pig crossings during midday hours when pig movement is inactive. Also look for recent and active rooting patches. Once you’ve discovered some potential areas, get up high and use the binos. Also, I recommend you not hunt any closer than 100 yards from an active pig trail. (Unless you’re archery hunting.)

My best advice is to learn how to detect something out of place. I have been able to spot pigs in brush up to 200 yards away. No matter what is hunted, memorize in your mind what it looks like down to individual body parts. Then when out in the field, those little details tend to pop out in the natural surroundings. On occasion, some of the body parts I first saw were an ear or a leg or a tail or the back line. Viewing movement in brush is the quickest way to find any game type. Likewise, that’s how game finds us in their environment. So keep your movements limited. Slow movements are best. Never move when pigs are looking in your direction within 100 yards. But if you’re within that distance, a bullet should have already downed the beast.

It is best to approach pigs with the wind in your face. A pig’s nose is its best defense. Pig’s eye sight is poor. During photography, I've been able to approach pigs within 4 yards once and they never new knew I was there, that is, until they began to hear my shutter. It was amusing to observe their reaction.

Personally, I don’t spend any time hunting for pigs 2 hours after daylight. I know some hunters that rarely hunt pigs in the morning. And I won’t generally hunt pigs until the last two hours of the day. I have seen more pigs the last hour of shooting time than any other time period. So when you spot pigs, be prepared to move quickly. Remember, pay attention to wind change. Do your best to keep your eyes on the game, especially if you have to move from a distance so you won’t lose sight of where they are located.

I hope this info helps.

The pigs are usually out and moving the first and last shooting hour of the day. C1 and C3 are excellent areas to hunt. I saw two this evening in C3. The pigs are out there. What's your hunting technique?

Rimfire cartridges for hunting have been prohibited at Vandenberg AFB for many years. Maybe it's about time for change.

13  General Category / Legislative Action / Re: CA Concealed Carry Permit on: October 29, 2012, 11:37:03 AM
I'm PCSing to Vandenberg this summer and am curious how hard it is to get a Concealed Carry Permit from the counties near the base?  I have one for Utah, but since California doesn't recognize them there is no reciprocity.

Three words: Forget about it.

It is extremely difficult to obtain a Concealed Carry Permit. You certainly can try. Visit http://www.californiaconcealedcarry.com/ for more information.
14  General Category / Varmit Hunting / Re: Varmit Hunting on Vandenberg on: October 05, 2012, 12:09:04 PM
I don't know of any restrictions for hunting coyotes during deer season. There are some that hunt only boar during deer season and that hasn't been a problem. But regardless of what you are hunting during deer season, you must check in and out with Fish and Game office on base.
